New Therapy Groups
CBT Booster Group
This group has been primarily designed for those who have received individual therapy through the Better Access (Medicare rebate) scheme and have been affected by cutbacks in the number of individual therapy sessions offered through that scheme to ten sessions per year. Our research has demonstrated that many clients require more than ten sessions of individual therapy and this group will assist those individuals to access further psychological therapy. It will likely particularly assist those with such difficulties as longer-term or severe depression, longer-term or severe anxiety reactions, longer-term or complex trauma reactions, or any additional personality or behavioural difficulties that can slow recovery including avoidant tendencies. The group is designed to be conducted weekly through to the end of 2011 with follow-up sessions in early 2012. The fee for group attendance is $70 per session, part of which could potentially be covered by Medicare rebates ($30 per session).
The group will review some of the most effective and powerful principles and strategies from the cognitive-behavioural therapy field. These include strategies from metacognitive therapy, schema therapy and Positive Psychology. The group will be conducted by Chris Mackey who specializes in CBT practice, supervision and research and who regularly attends national and international conferences in the area to keep abreast of recent developments.
Thursdays 11:45 am to 12:45 pm, from 17th November
Taking a Step Forward Group
The TAKING A STEP FORWARD GROUP is designed to help participants counter patterns of avoidance which relate in part to social anxiety and concerns about disapproval (see our weblog page for blog on avoidant tendencies). Avoidant characteristics include: being easily hurt by criticism, being unwilling to become involved with others unless certain of being liked, avoiding activities which have significant interpersonal contact, being inhibited in social situations, harbouring feelings of inadequacy, being restrained in intimate relationships, and exaggerating the difficulties of acting outside of one’s usual routine. This group has been found to assist participants to be more self-accepting and to be more optimistic about their potential for change. Participants are encouraged to set specific short-term and long-term goals to direct their ongoing efforts at change.
This will next run in early 2012
Day and time yet to be decided
The group runs for 10 sessions in all at 42 Villamanta St, Geelong West. The group will commence as soon as eight participants have committed themselves to attending. Follow-up groups will then be arranged after discussion with the group participants.
The fee for group attendance is $70 per session, part of which could potentially be covered by Medicare rebates ($30 per session). The group will be led by Chris Mackey who has over 30 years' experience running such therapy groups which incorporate open discussion as well as formal teaching input to enhance participants' practical use of coping skills.
